snow and more

It started around mid December and it is still happening. This is the first winter in more than twenty years that I had to shovel the roof. The sides of the trails are waist high to chest deep. I have had to shovel out the windows on the north side of the shop three times. and the north side of the house looks like a glacier. (the khumba ice fall?) Two nights ago we had the first above freezing evening in months and the ice and snow that I had not shoveled yet came off in one roaring slide ,… Continue

Living on the edge

For months we breathed smoke and wondered if we would make it to the rainy season. Hot and smokey with terrible visibility and nerves on edge. We even moved some irreplaceable items out to a safe location. But the fall rains did indeed come and even some good air and great autumn colors. Even though it is not the urban wildland interface you hear so much about we still do have some of the same issues so I continued my thinning project and removed more small crowded pines and hauled them up to… Continue

off the grid and in the boonies

We have been living in northern Gem County for more than twenty years in a small passive solar and photovoltaic home that we built ourselves. Living in an isolated area means that you have to be responsible for all of your support systems. (infrastructure). Water, electricity, waste, heat, communications and food storage systems all require some effort to install and maintain. I have been trying to get greener and more efficient so that the propane in the tank in the driveway will last longer or… Continue

In 2002 I wrote a short outline of my thoughts about the "Common Adventure on the Internet." And in 2003 I started a "Common Adventure Blog" but did not maintain it regularly, even though it still exists. In 2004, I was invited to give a presentation titled, "InterActive InterNetworking for… Continue

Ning now requiring payment for Idaho Common Adventure Network!

Important! - Please respond to this message as soon as possible this week!We started this "interest networking" project in the spring of 2007 and it was fairly active initially, but interest seems to have decreased over time.  Probably other "social networking" projects like Facebook and Twitter are being used instead.  I feel strongly that there will continue to be a place in the future  for "Interest" and "place based" networking even after the popular "social" networks have come and gone.I…See More

Amy Flavored replied to Nancy's discussion 'Home reno's and more'
Well paint generally does not contain lead anymore. That much is a good thing. I'm not sure what the current standard is but some of the greener options are Cementitious, Icynene spray, Soy-based polyurethane, and Cotton. More info on those…

Home reno's and more

hello all,I wondered how aware are the contractors about "green and environmental" building these days?I know they have some strict regulations for earthquake and wind issues, but I am not sure about the paint and insulation. Some have assured me that there are no toxic materials in the insulation any more; but how can we be sure of this; I do wonder.great tips here....kitchen contractorsSee More
